“Many people, myself among them, feel better at the mere sight of a book.” – Jane Smiley, Thirteen Ways of Looking at the Novel
It’s late December and time to take a look back at my 2017 reading.
I have read 19 books in total – missing my goal by one freaking book. No big deal.
The titles all link to their Goodreads page for easy addition to your TBR list.

I’ve just noticed that half my reads were autobiographies.
I like them and I guess it’s because I’m so curious and interested in other people’s lives – but in a good way!
Let’s start with the negative
The worst read for me this year was Robinson Crusoe. First time in a long time I wanted to punch a character in the face.
I could have stopped reading but I really hate to leave a book unfinished, so it was very painful.
Not my kind of adventure
I had some high expectations for some books and three left me really disappointed.
Wildflower by Drew Barrymore, #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso and The Ugly Beginning by T.W. Brown.
I liked Drew’s book but expected more and better.
Drew definitely had a traumatic childhood, however the first thing I said when I finished the book was… That’s it?!
That usually never happens when I read a memoir.
The writing was ok but honestly it was a bit boring.
#GIRLBOSS was supposed to be one of the best books.
I had read so many good reviews before purchasing it so my expectations were really high.
Turns out it was disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, her story is inspiring but it was all bragging, which I found really irritating.
That said, I will probably give it another chance and read it again later.
I thought I was going to love The Ugly Beginning because I’m easy to please with zombie material and am a huge fan of Rhiannon
I was lost and couldn’t say who was who anymore.
Mindy, Laurel, Estée, the Columbine kids and North Korean lives
Despite these few disappointing notes, I liked most of the books I’ve read this year.
Let me first recommend Why Not Me? by comedian Mindy Kaling.
Her first book, Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, was such a fun read and I knew the second would be just as great.
I love Mindy’s humour and think she’s a great body-image role model.
Love Letters to the Dead was a very emotional read – one I could relate to at some points.
This book is beautiful and devastating at the same time.
Teenager Laurel writes letters to famous dead people, such as Kurt Cobain and River Phoenix, after her sister suddenly dies.
What started as a simple school assignment quickly turns into a series of epistolary confessions and a journey to self-discovery.
I also enjoyed reading Bloom: Navigating Life and Style by YouTuber Estée Lalonde.
I adore Estée and she’s one of my favourite Internet people. Bloom is a quick read but an inspiring and charming one.
The book Columbine was really poignant and had me in tears. Definitely an important book to read.
And the gold medal goes to Nothing to Envy: Ordinary Lives in North Korea.
This book is still haunting me to this day.
I never cared that much about North Korea until I read this one.
It’s interesting, captivating and definitely eye-opening.
I highly recommend this book –
